A new driveway is a hard-wearing surface for parking, such as block paving, resin bound gravel, tarmac or gravel, laid on an excavated and compacted sub-base with edging and drainage designed to carry vehicle loads and handle rainwater.

In Scottish Borders, we price a new driveway against our guide for Scotland, £3,800–£8,600 including VAT, then adjust it once we have surveyed your home. We work across Hawick, Galashiels, Peebles and Kelso and the rest of the county or region. Planning and building control requirements follow the rules for Scotland, and we look into your property's position before a written quote is sent.

The main things that change the figure:

  • Driveway area and the depth of excavation needed
  • Surface: gravel, tarmac, block paving, resin or stone
  • Drainage, soakaways and changes in level
  • Edging, steps, walls and manhole adjustments

Scope of the work

  • Survey of levels, drainage, manholes and access

  • Drainage channels or soakaway where needed
  • Manhole covers raised or replaced to new levels

Resin bound gravelA smooth, porous gravel finish that lets water drain through and needs little upkeep.
TarmacA practical, lower-cost surface that is quick to lay, with block edging for a neat finish.
GravelThe lowest-cost option, naturally permeable, laid on a stabilising grid to stop it spreading.
Natural stone or imprinted concretePremium paving setts or patterned concrete for a distinctive finish.

Housing across Scottish Borders

Mill towns such as Hawick, Galashiels and Selkirk have stone terraces and tenements from the textile industry, Melrose and Kelso have older sandstone centres, and farmhouses and cottages across the Borders are built of whinstone or sandstone under slate roofs. Post-war and newer estates surround the larger towns.

Mill-town terraces and tenements often need lime repointing, re-roofing in slate and replacement windows. Newer homes commonly take extensions and garage conversions, and rural properties add fencing, porches and driveways.

Cold winters with frost and snow on higher ground, and the Tweed and Teviot can flood low-lying properties.

Do you need permission in Scottish Borders?

As Scottish Borders is in Scotland, read the following with that system of planning and building control in mind. We check what applies to your house with the council before you receive a quote.

In Scotland, a hard surface in front of a house is usually permitted development if it is permeable or drains within the property. A dropped kerb or road opening needs consent from the council as roads authority.

A building warrant is not normally needed for a driveway.

Rules change and every property is different, so we check the planning history and constraints for your address before we quote.

How does the job run?

  1. A visit to your home

First, someone visits your home in Scottish Borders to see the space, take measurements and note anything that could affect the work, such as access or the condition of what is there. There is no charge for this visit.

  2. Your fixed price

After the survey we send a quote for a new driveway that fixes the price for the scope we've agreed. If you want to change materials or scope, we revise it in writing before anything is booked.

  3. Dates and permissions

With the quote agreed, we book the work in and handle preparation: permissions where needed, building control notifications, material orders and access arrangements for your Scottish Borders property.

  4. The work itself

The work is carried out to the agreed specification, with floors and furniture protected and the site kept tidy. At the end we clean up, walk through the finished job with you and hand over any certificates.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need planning permission for a driveway?

Whether a driveway needs planning permission depends on its size, surface and drainage, your home's location, whether it is listed or in a conservation area, and which UK nation you are in. In England, a new or replacement front driveway over 5m² needs permission unless it uses a permeable surface or drains to a lawn or border. We check the rules and design to suit.

Do I need permission for a dropped kerb?

A dropped kerb lets vehicles cross the pavement onto your drive, and creating or widening one needs consent from your local highways authority. They usually check visibility, the distance from junctions and trees, and whether there is enough space to park off the road. Many councils carry out the kerb work themselves or use approved contractors. We can help with the application.

Which postcodes in Scottish Borders do you cover?

We cover TD9, TD1, EH45 and TD5, along with the rest of Scottish Borders. If your postcode is not listed, get in touch anyway: our coverage is UK-wide, and we can usually arrange a survey wherever you live. Enter your postcode in the guide-price tool or contact form and we will confirm.

How do you stop a driveway flooding?

A driveway stays dry when rainwater can drain away rather than pooling or running towards the house. Permeable surfaces such as resin bound gravel or permeable block paving let water soak through to the ground. Non-permeable surfaces need falls directing water to a channel drain, soakaway or garden border. We check levels and drainage during the survey and design the falls accordingly.

Do you cover Hawick, Galashiels and Peebles?

Yes. As well as Scottish Borders, we cover Hawick, Galashiels and Peebles and the rest of Scottish Borders. Our coverage is UK-wide, so the process is the same wherever you are: a free site survey, a quote in writing that fixes the price for the agreed scope, and one point of contact while the work is planned and carried out.
