Questions and answers
How do I book a free site survey and written quote?
Start with our guide-price tool at /quote/ or send us your details through the contact page at /contact/, and we'll arrange a convenient time to visit. At the survey we measure up, look at access, the structure and any approvals the job may need, and talk through what you want. We then send a written quote setting out the agreed specification and a fixed price for that specification. The survey and quote are free, with no obligation to go ahead.
Which areas do you cover?
We cover the whole of the UK: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Every job is planned and managed by us and carried out by trades working under our contract. Because planning and building rules differ between the four nations, we check what applies to your property and your council before we quote. You can see more about coverage on our areas page at /areas/, or simply tell us your postcode when you get in touch.
Are the prices on your website quotes?
No. The prices on our website are guide ranges, including VAT at 20%, to help you plan a budget. Every home is different, and the final price depends on size, access, condition, the specification you choose and any approvals needed. After a free site survey, we confirm the price in writing as a fixed price for the agreed specification. Only that written quote is an offer to carry out the work.
How does payment work?
Payment stages are set out in your written quote before any work starts, so you know exactly what is due and when. We invoice each stage as it falls due and explain what it covers. If the work changes through an agreed variation, the change in price is confirmed in writing and added to the relevant stage. If anything about the payment terms is unclear, ask us before you sign and we will go through it with you.
Who carries out the work?
We plan and manage your project from survey to handover, and the work is carried out by trades working under our contract, so you have one point of contact and one agreement. Electrical and gas work is done by suitably registered and qualified people and certified on completion. We coordinate the trades, materials, inspections and approvals so the job runs in the right order.
Do you deal with planning permission and building control?
Yes. Before quoting, we check whether your project is likely to need planning permission, a certificate of lawfulness, Building Regulations approval or, in Scotland, a building warrant, along with any party wall notices in England and Wales. Where they are needed, we can arrange drawings, structural calculations and applications as part of the job, and we hand over the completion paperwork at the end. Any fees are shown in your quote.
How long will my project take?
It depends on the job. As a rough guide, a bathroom or kitchen typically takes one to three weeks on site, a loft conversion six to twelve weeks, and a single-storey extension ten to sixteen weeks. Drawings, approvals and made-to-order materials can add time before work starts. We give you an expected programme before the job begins and keep you updated if weather or hidden problems affect it.
Can I stay at home while the work is done?
Most people stay at home during the work, including extensions and loft conversions, where much of the building happens outside or from scaffolding. There will be noise, dust and short breaks in water, power or heating, and we tell you about these in advance. For larger renovations, or when you will be without a kitchen or bathroom for a while, we talk through phasing the work or whether moving out for part of it makes sense.
What happens if I want to change something during the job?
Changes are fine, but we agree them in writing before the work is done. We call this a variation: it records what is changing, the effect on the price and the effect on the timescale, and you confirm it before we go ahead. This keeps the price clear for both sides. Changes usually cost least early on, before cables and pipes are covered by plaster.
Can I cancel after agreeing a quote?
If you sign a contract at your home, away from business premises, or at a distance such as online or by phone, consumer law usually gives you 14 days to cancel. Your written contract explains your cancellation rights and how to use them. If you ask us to start within that period and then cancel, you may have to pay for work already done. This is general information, not legal advice.
What should I have ready before the survey?
It helps to have a rough idea of what you want, a budget range, and any photos or examples you like. If you have them, keep drawings, planning decisions, previous building control certificates, title deeds and details of any shared walls or drains to hand. Let us know about access and parking, and whether the property is listed, in a conservation area, or a flat with a lease.
Do you take on small jobs?
Yes, we take on smaller jobs such as roof repairs, replastering a room, repointing, a new front door or a short run of fencing, as well as larger projects. Every job starts with a free site survey and a written quote, so the process is the same whatever the size. Combining several small jobs into one visit can make better use of scaffolding and labour.
Who arranges skips, scaffolding and parking?
We arrange skips, scaffolding and deliveries as part of the job and include them in your quote. If a skip or scaffold needs to go on the road or pavement, a permit or licence is arranged with the council before it goes up. We ask about parking on your drive or street at the survey, and keep paths and shared access clear and tidy during the work.
How do you use my personal data?
We use the details you give us to respond to your enquiry, arrange your survey, prepare your quote and carry out the work. Our privacy notice at /privacy/ explains what we collect, why we need it, how long we keep it, who we share it with to deliver the work, and how to use your rights, including asking for a copy of your data or for it to be deleted.
How does the guide-price tool work?
Our guide-price tool at /quote/ asks a few short questions about your project, such as the type of work, its size and the finish you want, and gives a guide price range including VAT. It is a planning aid, not a quote. If the range suits your budget, you can send us your details to book a free site survey, and we confirm the price in writing afterwards.
What happens if something goes wrong after the job is finished?
If you notice a problem after the work is finished, tell us in writing as soon as you can, with photos if possible and a short description of what you have noticed. We will arrange to inspect it and agree with you what needs to be done. Keep the paperwork from your job, including your contract, certificates and any product documents, as these help us deal with it quickly.
