Plastering is applying a smooth finishing coat of plaster to walls and ceilings, either as a thin skim over sound surfaces or as a full re-plaster after removing failed plaster, creating a flat surface ready for decoration.
Planning plastering and skimming for a home in Hereford means making a handful of decisions about materials, layout, finish and timing. We help you work through them at a free survey, then confirm in writing what it will cost for the options you pick. Most projects of this type need 1–3 days per room, plus drying time, and we cover every HR1 address as well as the rest of Herefordshire.

Homes in Herefordshire
Herefordshire is known for black-and-white timber-framed buildings, especially in villages around Weobley, Pembridge and Eardisland. Old Red Sandstone is used widely in churches, farmhouses and walls, Hereford has Victorian terraces and interwar suburbs, and market towns such as Leominster, Ledbury and Ross-on-Wye mix historic centres with newer estates.
Timber-framed and sandstone properties often need lime plaster, breathable finishes and careful roof repairs. Town terraces suit loft conversions and rear extensions, and rural homes commonly add porches, driveways and fencing.
In Hereford, as elsewhere in Herefordshire, we take the building's age and construction into account before recommending anything, because both can change what is involved in plastering and skimming.
Do you need permission in Hereford?
England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland each handle planning a little differently. Hereford comes under England, covered below, and we raise any questions with the council before your quote is finalised.
Internal work such as a new kitchen, bathroom, flooring, plastering or decorating does not need planning permission in England, unless the house is listed, when listed building consent may be needed even for internal changes.
Some internal work is covered by Building Regulations: new electrical circuits and work in bathrooms (Part P), new drainage, structural changes, extractor ventilation and any new window. Notifiable work is certified by a registered installer or by building control.
Rules change and every property is different, so we check the planning history and constraints for your address before we quote.
From survey to handover
A visit to your home
A free survey comes first. It gives us what we need to price plastering and skimming properly, including dimensions, existing materials and access for deliveries, and gives you the chance to ask anything you like.
Quote in writing
We put everything into a written, fixed-price quote: the specification, what's excluded, staged payments and the expected time on site. Take whatever time you need to decide; there's no pressure to commit.
Booking the work
With the quote agreed, we book the work in and handle preparation: permissions where needed, building control notifications, material orders and access arrangements for your Hereford property.
Build and hand over
On site, the agreed plan is followed and any change is put in writing first. At completion we do a final clean, go through the snagging list with you and leave you with the relevant documents.

Common questions
Do you cover Ross-on-Wye, Leominster and Ledbury?
Yes. As well as Hereford, we cover Ross-on-Wye, Leominster and Ledbury and the rest of Herefordshire. Our coverage is UK-wide, so the process is the same wherever you are: a free site survey, a quote in writing that fixes the price for the agreed scope, and one point of contact while the work is planned and carried out.
How much does it cost to plaster a room?
Skimming the walls and ceiling of a typical double bedroom costs £550–£1,550, depending on the room size, the state of the existing surfaces and whether new plasterboard is needed. As a guide, a skim coat costs roughly £15–£35 per square metre, while a full re-plaster back to brick costs more. Stairwells and high ceilings add access costs. We confirm a fixed price after inspecting the walls.
What happens at the survey?
We visit your home at a time that suits you, look at the area involved, take measurements and check access, condition and any services that might be affected. We talk through what you want from plastering and skimming, explain the options and answer questions. There is no charge and no obligation; afterwards we send a written quote.
Should older houses be plastered with lime?
Older homes with solid walls and no damp-proof course are often better with lime plaster, because it lets moisture move through the wall and evaporate. Modern gypsum plaster can trap moisture in these walls, which can cause damp patches and blown plaster. Lime takes longer to apply and dry, so it costs more. We check your wall construction before recommending a material.
When can I paint new plaster?
New plaster can be painted once it is fully dry and evenly pale in colour. The first coat should be a mist coat, which is watered-down emulsion or a specialist primer that soaks into the plaster and seals it. Applying normal emulsion straight on can cause peeling. Vinyl or wipeable paints should be avoided for the first coat, because they stop moisture escaping.
