A bathroom installation replaces your old suite with new sanitaryware, a bath or shower, tiling and fittings, including the plumbing, electrics, ventilation and waterproofing needed for a complete, watertight room.

Getting a new bathroom right in Cambridge starts with understanding the house you already have: its age, how it was built and what has been altered over the years. We survey first, then commit on paper to a price that holds as long as the scope stays the same. Across the East of England, guide prices run at £5,200–£12,500 including VAT, and homes in Newmarket, Ely and Huntingdon are covered too.

Local housing and a new bathroom

Cambridge has many Victorian terraces in pale gault brick, with Edwardian villas and modern estates around the city. Peterborough expanded as a new town from the 1970s, adding large planned estates, while Ely, Huntingdon, St Neots and the Fenland market towns keep Georgian and Victorian centres. Limestone appears in villages near the Northamptonshire border.

Narrow terraces commonly suit loft conversions and kitchen extensions. Newer estate homes often need garage conversions, porches and landscaping, and older brick and stone buildings may call for lime-based repointing and carefully specified windows.

Knowing the typical building types in Cambridgeshire helps, but a survey of your own home in Cambridge is what decides the right approach to a new bathroom.

Do you need permission in Cambridge?

Each UK nation sets its own consent rules, and Cambridge is in England. What follows is a plain summary; we check the specifics for your property with the council before pricing anything.

Internal work such as a new kitchen, bathroom, flooring, plastering or decorating does not need planning permission in England, unless the house is listed, when listed building consent may be needed even for internal changes.

Some internal work is covered by Building Regulations: new electrical circuits and work in bathrooms (Part P), new drainage, structural changes, extractor ventilation and any new window. Notifiable work is certified by a registered installer or by building control.

Rules change and every property is different, so we check the planning history and constraints for your address before we quote.

How does the job run?

  1. Survey and measure

First, someone visits your home in Cambridge to see the space, take measurements and note anything that could affect the work, such as access or the condition of what is there. There is no charge for this visit.

  2. Quote in writing

We turn the survey notes into a written quote. The price is fixed for the specification we agree, and the document sets out materials, scope and payment stages in plain language.

  3. Getting ready

Next comes planning the work itself. We set a start date that suits you, line up the right trades, and make sure any approvals for a new bathroom are in place before the first day on site.

  4. Finish and handover

The work is carried out to the agreed specification, with floors and furniture protected and the site kept tidy. At the end we clean up, walk through the finished job with you and hand over any certificates.

Common questions

Which tiles are easiest to keep clean?

Large-format porcelain tiles are usually easiest to keep clean, because there are fewer grout lines to collect dirt and porcelain absorbs very little water. Glossy tiles show water marks more than matt ones, while textured floor tiles give better grip. Grout colour matters too: mid-grey hides staining better than white. We can suggest anti-slip ratings and grout options that suit how you use the room.

Will I have to go without a bathroom?

If it is your only bathroom, you will usually be without a shower or bath for most of the fitting time. We aim to keep the toilet working overnight wherever possible, refitting it temporarily at the end of each day during strip-out and first fix. If you have a second bathroom or downstairs toilet, the disruption is much easier. We plan the sequence with you before starting.

How long does it take to fit a bathroom?

Fitting a typical bathroom takes one to two weeks on site. Strip-out and first-fix plumbing and electrics come first, followed by any plastering or boarding, waterproofing, tiling and then the suite, taps and fittings. Wet rooms and rooms with underfloor heating take longer because screeds and waterproofing need time to cure. We give you a day-by-day plan before work starts.

Do you cover Newmarket, Ely and Huntingdon?

Yes. As well as Cambridge, we cover Newmarket, Ely and Huntingdon and the rest of Cambridgeshire. Our coverage is UK-wide, so the process is the same wherever you are: a free site survey, a quote in writing that fixes the price for the agreed scope, and one point of contact while the work is planned and carried out.

Can you combine a new bathroom with other work?

Yes. Because we manage several trades under one contract, we can plan a new bathroom alongside other work on your Cambridge home, such as new windows with rendering, or a kitchen refit with an extension. Combining jobs can reduce repeat set-up such as scaffolding, skips and access, and every element is listed and priced in the same written quote.
