Repointing is raking out old, crumbling mortar from between bricks and replacing it with fresh mortar, sealing the joints against rain and protecting the wall; brickwork repairs replace spalled or cracked bricks and rebuild damaged sections.
We offer brickwork and repointing throughout Oxfordshire, from Oxford, Banbury, Abingdon and Bicester to the smaller places in between. Each project starts with a free survey at your home and ends with a written figure, fixed for the work you choose. Because Oxfordshire is in England, we work to the planning system and building standards used there, and guide prices for the South East run at £2,800–£6,700 including VAT.

Housing across Oxfordshire
West Oxfordshire's Cotswold villages are built of honey-coloured limestone, while Banbury and the north use orange ironstone. Oxford has Victorian terraces in Jericho and East Oxford and Gothic brick villas in North Oxford. Didcot, Bicester and Witney have grown with large new estates around older market-town centres.
Stone cottages often need lime pointing and conservation-sensitive windows. Victorian terraces suit loft conversions and side-return extensions, and newer estate homes commonly take garage conversions and garden landscaping.
Low ground around Oxford and Abingdon floods from the Thames and its tributaries; the Cotswold uplands are more exposed to wind and frost.
Planning and building rules in Oxfordshire
The notes below cover England, which is where Oxfordshire sits. Rules change and every property is different, so we speak to the council before pricing your job.
Repointing and repairing brickwork with matching materials is maintenance, so it does not need planning permission in England. On a listed building, work that affects its character, including a change of mortar or brick, may need listed building consent.
Building Regulations do not normally apply to repointing or brick repairs, but rebuilding a wall, chimney or structural section can need building control involvement.
Rules change and every property is different, so we check the planning history and constraints for your address before we quote.
How does the job run?
We look at the job
A free survey comes first. It gives us what we need to price brickwork and repointing properly, including dimensions, existing materials and access for deliveries, and gives you the chance to ask anything you like.
Your fixed price
The quote arrives in writing, not over the phone. It covers the full scope, the finishes you've chosen, any exclusions and the payment schedule, with a fixed price tied to that specification.
Dates and permissions
Once you accept, we agree start dates, order materials and deal with any planning, building control or neighbour notices the job needs. You'll know who is coming and when before work begins.
The work itself
On site, the agreed plan is followed and any change is put in writing first. At completion we do a final clean, go through the snagging list with you and leave you with the relevant documents.

Questions about brickwork and repointing in Oxfordshire
Which postcodes in Oxfordshire do you cover?
We cover OX1, OX16, OX14 and OX6, along with the rest of Oxfordshire. If your postcode is not listed, get in touch anyway: our coverage is UK-wide, and we can usually arrange a survey wherever you live. Enter your postcode in the guide-price tool or contact form and we will confirm.
What causes bricks to crumble?
Bricks usually crumble, or spall, when water gets into them and turns to ice, pushing the face off. This is often caused by hard cement mortar or impermeable paint trapping moisture in soft bricks, or by leaking gutters soaking the wall. Damaged bricks can be cut out and replaced with matching ones, or turned round if the back face is sound. We fix the cause at the same time.
Should my house be repointed with lime or cement?
Houses built before about the 1920s were usually built with soft bricks and lime mortar, and should normally be repointed in lime. Hard cement mortar in these walls traps moisture and can cause the brick faces to crumble. Newer homes built with cement mortar are usually repointed in a similar mix. We check your wall construction before recommending a mortar.
How long will brickwork and repointing take?
On a typical home, allow 3–10 days for a typical house. Larger projects, older buildings and extra work found once things are opened up can extend that, while simpler jobs may be shorter. Your quote includes an estimate of time on site, and your point of contact keeps you updated on the programme as the work progresses.
Is repointing messy or noisy?
Raking out old mortar is noisy and dusty, especially when power tools are used on hard mortar. We sheet scaffolding to contain dust, keep windows closed nearby and clear up at the end of each day. The noisy phase moves around the house elevation by elevation. Inside, you may notice some dust on windowsills, so it helps to keep windows shut.
