A new driveway is a hard-wearing surface for parking, such as block paving, resin bound gravel, tarmac or gravel, laid on an excavated and compacted sub-base with edging and drainage designed to carry vehicle loads and handle rainwater.

We offer a new driveway throughout Berkshire, from Reading, Slough, Bracknell and Maidenhead to the smaller places in between. Each project starts with a free survey at your home and ends with a written figure, fixed for the work you choose. Because Berkshire is in England, we work to the planning system and building standards used there, and guide prices for the South East run at £4,500–£10,000 including VAT.

Housing across Berkshire

Reading's Victorian terraces often show the town's patterned red and silver-grey brickwork, while Windsor, Maidenhead and Newbury mix Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian houses. Bracknell grew as a post-war new town with planned estates, Slough has a great deal of interwar and post-war housing, and newer developments sit on the edge of most towns.

Period terraces lend themselves to side-return extensions and dormer lofts; post-war and new-town homes often need replacement windows, roofline renewal and extra space. Larger detached houses commonly take on kitchen extensions, bifold doors and landscaping.

Much of the Thames Valley is low-lying, so flood risk and clay ground near the river can influence foundations and drainage for extensions.

Planning and building rules in Berkshire

Berkshire is in England, so the planning and building rules set out below are the ones that apply. We confirm the details with the council before we quote.

In England, a new or replacement front-garden surface over 5 m² needs planning permission unless it is permeable or drains to a lawn or border within your property. A new dropped kerb needs consent from the council’s highways team, and access onto a classified road may need planning permission.

Building Regulations do not usually apply to driveways, but drainage must not discharge onto the road or a neighbour’s land.

Rules change and every property is different, so we check the planning history and constraints for your address before we quote.

How does the job run?

  1. Free site survey

First, someone visits your home in Berkshire to see the space, take measurements and note anything that could affect the work, such as access or the condition of what is there. There is no charge for this visit.

  2. Your fixed price

After the survey we send a quote for a new driveway that fixes the price for the scope we've agreed. If you want to change materials or scope, we revise it in writing before anything is booked.

  3. Dates and permissions

Once you accept, we agree start dates, order materials and deal with any planning, building control or neighbour notices the job needs. You'll know who is coming and when before work begins.

  4. The work itself

The job proceeds in the order set out in the programme, with dust and debris kept under control. Finally we tidy away, inspect the work together and pass the finished project over to you with its paperwork.

Frequently asked questions

What is a sub-base and why does it matter?

The sub-base is the layer of crushed, compacted stone beneath the driveway surface that spreads the weight of vehicles into the ground. Most driveway failures, such as sinking, rutting and loose blocks, come from a sub-base that is too thin or poorly compacted. We excavate to the right depth for your soil and compact the sub-base in layers before laying the surface.

Do I need permission for a dropped kerb?

A dropped kerb lets vehicles cross the pavement onto your drive, and creating or widening one needs consent from your local highways authority. They usually check visibility, the distance from junctions and trees, and whether there is enough space to park off the road. Many councils carry out the kerb work themselves or use approved contractors. We can help with the application.

How do you stop a driveway flooding?

A driveway stays dry when rainwater can drain away rather than pooling or running towards the house. Permeable surfaces such as resin bound gravel or permeable block paving let water soak through to the ground. Non-permeable surfaces need falls directing water to a channel drain, soakaway or garden border. We check levels and drainage during the survey and design the falls accordingly.

How much will a new driveway cost in Berkshire?

As a guide, expect to pay £4,500–£10,000 including VAT for a new driveway in Berkshire. That range is adjusted for the South East, which runs about 12% above the national guide. Where your project lands depends on size, materials, access and the condition of what is already there. We confirm a fixed price in writing after a free survey of your home.

Can I stay at home during the work?

In most cases, yes. Most people can live at home throughout, and we plan the work to keep disruption down by protecting floors, agreeing working hours and keeping access routes clear. Bigger jobs affecting kitchens, bathrooms or heating may mean a short spell with reduced facilities, and we talk this through with you at the survey.
