A new driveway is a hard-wearing surface for parking, such as block paving, resin bound gravel, tarmac or gravel, laid on an excavated and compacted sub-base with edging and drainage designed to carry vehicle loads and handle rainwater.
From Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster and Barnsley to the quieter corners of South Yorkshire, homeowners can book a free survey for a new driveway. We look at the building, agree the scope, then send a quote in writing that fixes the cost of that scope. Work follows the rules for England, and our published range for Yorkshire and the Humber, £3,800–£8,500 with VAT, gives you a sense of budget before we visit.

Housing across South Yorkshire
Sheffield's housing climbs steep hillsides, with Victorian brick terraces, stone villas in the western suburbs and large interwar and post-war council estates. Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster have long rows of colliery-era brick terraces, post-war housing including some non-traditional construction, and newer estates continue to grow around Doncaster.
Terraces often suit loft conversions and rear extensions, and steep plots can call for retaining walls, steps and terraced patios. Older homes commonly need repointing, window replacement and roof work.
The Pennine edge brings heavy rain and cold winds, river valleys such as the Don have a history of flooding, and old mine workings can affect ground.
Do you need permission in South Yorkshire?
England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland each handle planning a little differently. South Yorkshire comes under England, covered below, and we raise any questions with the council before your quote is finalised.
In England, a new or replacement front-garden surface over 5 m² needs planning permission unless it is permeable or drains to a lawn or border within your property. A new dropped kerb needs consent from the council’s highways team, and access onto a classified road may need planning permission.
Building Regulations do not usually apply to driveways, but drainage must not discharge onto the road or a neighbour’s land.
Rules change and every property is different, so we check the planning history and constraints for your address before we quote.
The four stages
We look at the job
We arrange a free site survey on a date convenient to you. We measure up, look at the existing structure and access, and discuss your plans for a new driveway so the price reflects your home.
Written quote
After the survey we send a quote for a new driveway that fixes the price for the scope we've agreed. If you want to change materials or scope, we revise it in writing before anything is booked.
Booking the work
Before anyone starts, we confirm the programme in writing, check whether consents are required and arrange deliveries. If a skip or scaffolding on the road needs a permit, we apply for it.
Build and hand over
The work is carried out to the agreed specification, with floors and furniture protected and the site kept tidy. At the end we clean up, walk through the finished job with you and hand over any certificates.
How we work
Questions about a new driveway in South Yorkshire
How much will a new driveway cost in South Yorkshire?
As a guide, expect to pay £3,800–£8,500 including VAT for a new driveway in South Yorkshire. That range is adjusted for Yorkshire and the Humber, which runs about 6% below the national guide. Where your project lands depends on size, materials, access and the condition of what is already there. We confirm a fixed price in writing after a free survey of your home.
Which postcodes in South Yorkshire do you cover?
We cover S1, S60, DN1 and S70, along with the rest of South Yorkshire. If your postcode is not listed, get in touch anyway: our coverage is UK-wide, and we can usually arrange a survey wherever you live. Enter your postcode in the guide-price tool or contact form and we will confirm.
Do I need permission for a dropped kerb?
A dropped kerb lets vehicles cross the pavement onto your drive, and creating or widening one needs consent from your local highways authority. They usually check visibility, the distance from junctions and trees, and whether there is enough space to park off the road. Many councils carry out the kerb work themselves or use approved contractors. We can help with the application.
Which driveway surface is easiest to maintain?
Resin bound gravel is one of the easiest surfaces to maintain, because it is smooth, porous and resists weeds, needing only an occasional sweep and wash. Block paving needs re-sanding joints and occasional weed control. Tarmac needs little upkeep but can soften in heat. Gravel needs raking and topping up. We explain the upkeep of each surface before you choose.
Can I use my car during the work?
You will not be able to park on the driveway while it is being dug out and laid, so plan to park on the street or nearby for the duration. We keep a safe pedestrian route to your front door where possible. After completion, block paving and tarmac can usually be driven on straight away, while resin and concrete need a short curing period first.
